How could this be in our Constitution? Do we really believe if someone has been convicted of a crime they can legally become a slave? The United States remains one of the world’s strictest nations when it comes to denying the right to vote to citizens convicted of crimes. An estimated 6.1 million Americans are prohibited from voting because of “felony disenfranchisement,” or laws restricting voting rights for those convicted of felony-level crimes. Elections matter Friends and Families make a Difference
In this election year, the question of voting restrictions is once again receiving great public attention. This information is intended to update, expand knowledge and create awareness of voter disenfranchisement. The numbers presented here represent assessment of the state of felony disenfranchisement as of the November 2016 election which is a major source of voter disenfranchisement. This information is from sentencing project and various sources. The 2016 election must ensure that voter disenfranchisement is stoped at every level.
"Direct" disenfranchisement refers to actions that explicitly prevent people from voting or having their votes counted, as opposed to "indirect" techniques, which attempt to prevent people's votes from having an impact on political outcomes (e.g., gerrymandering, ballot box stuffing, stripping elected officials of their powers).
The 15th Amendment prohibited explicit disenfranchisement on the basis of race or prior enslavement. So Southern states devised an array of alternative techniques designed to disenfranchise blacks and, to a lesser extent, poor whites. There were three broad, overlapping phases of the disenfranchisement process. From 1868-1888, the principal techniques of disenfranchisement were illegal, based on violence and massive fraud in the vote counting process. Starting in 1877, when Georgia passed the cumulative poll tax, states implemented statutory methods of disenfranchisement. From 1888-1908, states entrenched these legal techniques in their constitutions. Here we explore the principal means of direct disenfranchisement, and the attempts to use Federal law to prevent disenfranchisement, through 1965, when the Voting Rights Act was passed. For the most part, until the advent of the Civil Rights Movement in the 20th c., the Supreme Court acquiesced in the methods used to disenfranchise blacks by gutting the Federal laws enacted to protect blacks. Whenever it resisted, the Southern states followed the motto "if at first you don't succeed. . . ."

The Free Karachi Campaign has launched its second phase in the United States with billboard advertisements. As part of the campaign, nearly 100 taxis are running around the U.S. capital with banners reading #FreeKarachi. Taxi routes include important locations of the city such as- White House, Capitol Hill, State Department and lawmakers' offices. Campaign for the rights of residents of Pakistan’s urban Sindh Province kick-started in the city on Dr. Martin Luther King Junior Day with taxis displaying ‘Free Karachi’ banners participated in a parade.
